Solana Integrates Filecoin to Enhance Historic Data Accessibility

Solana, one of the top proof-of-stake blockchains, has integrated Filecoin, a decentralized file-saving blockchain-based system, to make its block history accessible for third-party apps. According to Filecoin, this will allow Solana to achieve improved redundancy and scalability for part of its data set while leveraging a decentralized solution like Filecoin.

The Solana blockchain is integrating the services of Filecoin, a file-saving blockchain system protocol launched in 2020, to increase the availability level of certain data in its blockchain. According to a post by Filecoin on X, Solana’s integration includes saving its block history using Filecoin’s capabilities.

This will enhance the discoverability and retrieval of this data for third-party applications that make use of this data, like infrastructure providers, explorers, indexers, and anyone needing historical access. Filecoin states this move constitutes “a significant move away from centralized storage solutions and a remarkable step towards enhancing the reliability and scalability of the Solana blockchain.”

It also reported this will bring enhanced data redundancy, scalability, and security while “staying true to its decentralized ethos.”

The integration was achieved by the joint work made by Triton One, a Solana Remote Procedure Call (RPC) provider, and Dcent, a Web3 file storage provider. Triton One stated this work is essential to make Solana available to everyone while taking advantage of a decentralized platform.

Filecoin plays a relevant role in a project named Old Faithful, whose purpose is to break Solana’s dependence on Bigtable, a proprietary and centralized cloud-based database service, and focus on putting Solana’s history archive in decentralized media. Old Faithful is also part of Project Yellowstone, an initiative intending to reinvent Solana’s RPC stack.

Anatoly Yakovenko, a co-founder of Solana Labs, praised this new functionality. Yakovenko declared:

I am really excited to see this launch. Huge thanks to Filecoin for building an awesome decentralized archive layer. And to Triton One, who did a ton of work to ship this!
